THINKING TOOLS FOR THE NET

Project's web-pages:
http://cs.joensuu.fi/pages/avt/

NOTE! This project has ended on August, 2003. A new project, MirrorWolf, has been started to continue the work presented here.

The current trend is to convert conventional static profiles or collections of documents to web pages. TTN focuses its research on providing intelligent and interactive portfolios, accessible even from mobile phones. Intelligent portfolios refers to digital portfolios which have been expanded with an intelligent user interface and a mechanism to support automatic communication between portfolios located on separate servers. This means that software makes decisions by itself and is capable of producing summaries of many kinds, tutor or even counsel the user.

SAMPLE PROJECTS

TTN is developing Concept Mapping, Visualization Tools and String Searching Machines:

  • A Learning Bridge Prototype
For learner concepts are islands and connections between pieces of information are bridges that bind pieces of information to knowledge. This prototype helps learner to find correct bindings between information and intelligently supports learner in his trouble areas.

  • Visual Tools for Learning Communities
These are visual tools supporting a social learning process that apply or extend existing graphical libraries or developing novel cognitive instruments for social learning environments.

  • Automatic Evaluations of Essays
The Java-based essay grading system is based on Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA). LSA is a corpus-based statistical method, related to neural network models, which provides a means of comparing the semantic similarity between a source and target text. LSA can also be considered as a computational model of human knowledge representation. Research has showed that the method is able to simulate learning and several other psycholinguistic phenomena.

The project is funded by the European Commission and Finnish National Technology Agency, TEKES and three companies: Karjalan Tietovalta / Novo Group, Discendum, Sordino Information Systems
