In the ViSCoS (Virtual Studies of Computer Science) eLearning program, students study the first year university-level computer science courses via the web. ViSCoS courses require about 600 hours of study work (equals to 25 credit points in the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS)).The curriculum of ViSCoS consists of eight courses giving students the basic skills and knowledge in three main areas:

  • the preliminaries of ICT;
  • basics of programming with Java; and
  • an introduction to computer science.

ViSCoS studies started in year 2000, and it was first offered to high school students in the eastern part of the Finland. From year 2004, ViSCoS is run together with the Continuing Education Centre of the University of Joensuu. The program is currently open for anyone in Finland. All ViSCoS courses are studied online using Moodle learning environment. Students' learning is supported with both printed and digital learning materials, various digital learning tools and individual assessment of course exercises. Future development plans in ViSCoS include creation of English learning materials and studying with mobile devices within the concept of ViSCoS Mobile.
