• 1st INTERMEDIATE EXAM on November 14, 2001 at 8:00-10:00 am. T/B Auditorium (Louhela-sali).
  • Exam will start exactly at 8:00 and will last 2 hours. (Välikoe alkaa tasan klo 8 ja kestää 2 tuntia)
  • Calculators are prohibited. (Laskinten käyttö on kielletty).
  • In the exam, the questions are written in English and in Finnish. You can write your answer in English or in Finnish. If you are not sure about the translation of some words from English to Finnish, please write also the English word you are meaning. (Kysymykset on kirjoitettu englanniksi ja suomeksi. Kokeeseen voi vastata englanniksi tai suomeksi. Jos olet epävarma sanan käännöksestä englannista suomen kieleen, niin kirjoita silloin myös englanninkielinen sana, jota tarkoitat.)
  • The use of own paper dictionary is permitted only for IMPIT students. (Paperimuodossa olevan oman sanakirjan käyttö on sallittu vain IMPIT opiskelijoille )

• Exercise group 2: exercises 5 are moved from November 16 to November 12 at 10-12 am (T/B180). By this change the exercises 5 will be before the intermediate exam day.
• Exercises on October 29 and November 2 will be in T/B247.
• Exercises on Monday at 16-18, October 22, 2001 will be postponed to Thursday at 12-14, October 25, 2001 in T/B247. NO EXERCISES ON OCTOBER 22.
• Lecture on October 23, 2001 will be postponed: NO LECTURES ON OCTOBER 23, 2001.
• Lectures from October 23 are postponed to October 24, 2001 at 14-16 T/B Auditorium (Louhela-sali)

• The lectures will follow the structure of the book described in http://www.bell-labs.com/topic/books/os-book/slide-dir/index.html. However, using the material in that page only is not enough to pass the course. In the lectures, the book chapters will be described more detailed.

• In order to pass the course with intermediate exams, 1/3 of the total number of exercises must be done by the end of the course. In the exercise session, you are expected to be ready to present the marked exercise.

• 14 solved tasks are needed to for 1/3 requirement to pass the course using intermediate exams.

• Two intermediate exams or the general exam:

• In order to pass the course with intermediate exams, 1/3 of the total number of exercises must be done by the end of the course.

Course content

• Understanding the structure of computers and the function of operating systems and computer networks. Use of programming language C and UNIX tools. Control over individual working environment.
