Overview

Thank for your cooperation in this research project on using roles of variables in object-oriented programming.

We have developed a concept called "roles of variables" that formalizes intuitive concepts that you may have used in teaching novices. The purpose of this questionnaire is to validate our classification of roles.

This task is divided into three phases:

• In the first phase, you will be asked to study a tutorial on the roles of variables. For each role there is a definition and an example program. There is a link to the second phase at the bottom of the tutorial page.
  
  
• In the second phase, you will be asked to analyze some programs and identify the role of each variable in the program. You will be given feedback on your analysis.
  
  
• In the third phase, you will be asked to perform a similar analysis, but this time your results will be collected and analyzed for our research.

The estimated time required to complete this task is 40-50 minutes. During this time, you will learn the role concept, train yourself to recognize roles, and provide us invaluable information about the role classification. NOTE: If you feel that you are already familiar with the role concept in procedural programming you still should go through phases one and two. The set of roles is similar in these two paradigms but due to the nature of OO-paradigm there are some issues which will not appear in procedural programming. These issues will be introduced in first two phases.
