Graduation ceremonies at the University of Joensuu

Posted in life on April 26th, 2006 by roman

Today we discussed with Niko that is a sad practice to not have the graduation ceremonies at our university. In a master program, one studies for five years to get one of the highest academic awards. Then, s/he gets the diploma via mail. Sad!

As we talked, it would be enough to have the ceremony once in while (each month?) for the whole university. All BA/BSc, MA/MSc, PhLic and PhD could shake their hands with rector, get the diploma officially and with honor, listen to anthem and perhaps to some oration. Those who graduated with honors could get their minute of glory receiving a stipend in front of their (weeping) families. An unforgettable moment. University, in turn, would get a great PR.

I just cannot find a reason why not to have it. Shall we then try to propose the inaugurations?

Winter is over.

That is all wish, statement, observation and hopefully also a fact. I changed to summer tyres and want no back, that’s why.

It’s here again. THE main topic of any chat, discussion, and meeting. For an observer it almost looks like bragging: “Oh yes, just a little, my knee got sore, some three and half thousands, not more.” In between the discussions, one can hear pearls such as “Hum, their six year old son is incredible, yesterday he took his grandmum and they skied fifty, in two hours. He was almost dead but she wanted more.” But no, that’s not any showing off, that’s just a consequence of our great wonter conditions, I think. So instead of talking about last crop of wine grapes or high tides, here we mess about skiing.

“And Roman?” I skied zero, dudes.

Search forms that do not focus

Posted in hci, internet, usability on April 3rd, 2006 by roman

I just cannot get it, and it’s chasing me already for long. Why, on earth, some damn web-designers cannot make the first input bar on their web page to automatically focus when you enter the web page?!!!! Especially if the page in question is indeed a search interface!?? Why to force the users to click or tab to the input once they already decided that they want to search?

Some ‘great’ examples:
http://www.hs.fi/haku/,
http://www.joensuu.fi/tkt/haku.html,
http://www.joensuu.fi/haku.html, ..and many others.

Some examples that pass the test:
http://www.jns.fi/search/Search.phx, http://www.google.com/ig?hl=en, http://joel.amkit.fi/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi

How easy it would be for a user to just start typing the query and hit enter! Google can make it! Why then not the others? The problem here is that even with usability testing such a problem is hard to discover. Users often do not mind anyway to first navigate to the input bar. However, once you read this post, you will become aware :)

A solution general enough, just copy and paste, thanks!!!

skype me next time you want to give me a call, thanks.
