Teacher Seminar in Information Technology (173317) (3cu)

Spring 2006

(Tietotekniikan opettajaseminaari suomeksi)

Matti Tedre, University of Joensuu, Department of Computer Science

If there are enough participants who wish to take the course in English, the course will be tailored accordingly.

Because the number of participants for the course is limited, all the participants must sign-in for the course by sending an e-mail to the lecturer before the beginning of the course. The first n participants are allowed for the course.

Scientific writing in Computer Science (175131) must be completed before attending the course. Also courses Scientific/Academic Writing (700371) or Advanced Academic Writing (700471) will suffice.

The aim of the teacher seminar is to prepare the student for giving scientific presentations. The focus of the course is not on doing research but on (1) giving an oral presentation, (2) preparing visual material for the presentation, and (3) preparing supporting handouts for the presentation. The length of the presentation is approximately 15 minutes, after which 10 minutes is reserved for questions by the opponent and the audience.

The presentation should be based on the student's own research topic -- for instance, on bachelor's thesis, M.Sc. thesis, special projects, or other academic topics.

The participants must attend the introductory lectures Feb 14th and Feb 21st and the concluding lecture May 2nd. The participants must not miss more than one week of the seminar presentations.

The classes begin 14th February.
