PhD progress reports

The next PhD day will be dealing PhD progress reports from at least Marjo and possibly Jussi. As there are slots available, if you want to say anything about your PhD (methods you are using, papers you are writing,…) please contact me to arrange the best way to present your message.

For those presenting, I will appreciate if they could send me something for the others to read before your presentation.

Theme of the day:E-learning

I will like to ask the participants of the PhD day and the readers of this blog, to share their experiences in e-learning in other parts of the world. How is e-learning organized in other universities? Which roles can be found in e-learning departments and e-learning platforms?…

Please, comment to this post with your experiences and reflections.

Online participation

Online participation is possible, please email amoreno@cs to arrange it. Adobe connect is the preferred method. However, skype can be considered as well if Adobe solution is not good for you, e.g., linux user.

Some time ago I attended the rather dense PhD defense of a colleague from my group. His PhD has already been graded and awarded. I’d just present him with a portrait of that great day!

Portrait of a defender

Starting a promising career my other self has become a TV actor. After some unpredicted changes in its course, fate got me a very short acting role in Finnish series. Set your recorders for autumn 2009 (no worries I will remind you later) when a great episode of Karjalan kunnailla would be aired.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times

For a variety of subconscious reasons the above quote is bouncing inside my head in its original language, English. Problem is: I don’t know where I picked it up from. I googled the quote this morning. They are the introductory words to Dicken’s novel “A Tale of Two Cities”, which I watched three years ago as represented by the students of Joensuu Uni. However, I cannot recall the quote from then, and maybe I have read it somewhere else.

Connected somehow, this afternoon when I switched on my mp3 player, it started playing “Tale of Two Cities” by Chris Von Sneidern, from his album “California Redemption Value”. Nice melodies and lyrics…

Lastly and connected again somehow, Elemer, who starred the “Tale of Two Cities” play, was one of the conversation topics today at lunch. He recently moved to Lisboa, and is getting married somewhere in Finland. Here you can see him acting at his best!

First time I went to the photo shop I was surprised about how much they charged me for 4 pictures of my face. I needed them to get a new passport. Passport expired and I had to get another one. I was not happy to pay 11 € aprox again, and I thought about the possibility of just using their inexpensive digital photo print service. Biggest concern was to get the right size/resolution for the image. But time run out, and I had to pay the extortion fee again.

It won’t happen again. Now with epassportphoto.com I can get the right sized file from them and for free!!
