We had an interesting meeting with the people from Nokia Research Centre and Plan International at the department. We discussed how good all of us are and what good we are doing in the world.
They told us about an ongoing project to bring new media to kids in Kenia so they will be aware of the issues of their community and take part in it. Mobile penetration is Africa is far larger than landline phone penetration, and they are seeking ways to see how they interact with the phones.
At that moment, a scaring thought came to my mind, what if all this New Media thingy is just mambo-jambo from mobile companies? What a terrible side effect!! Their drive for more sales of mobiles has brought us to this world of senseless blog posts…
Ernesto remarks I should stop watching The Sopranos, which he has luckily sent to me, and write here…
I’ve been part of several online communities like WAYN and others, but I was already bored with them and had them in one of the corners of my mind. Two weeks ago I was introduced to Facebook, and I have been checking it this last weeks. Facebook is an online community oriented to college students and now expanding all across the world (20 million and counting).
Facebook ranks pretty high in my geeky standards, it looks professional, and there are many ways to make you feel part of the community, not that I will use of them. So you may consider having a look at it.
Biggest problem at the moment is adding my Spanish high school (warning: non web 2.0 ahead) to their list, which I have tried twice already to no avail. Interesting stats are the number of members from the different Finnish universities. Currently, the “University of Joensuu” network has 237 members, while Helsinki one has 2445, Tampere 642, and Turku 801 members.
Yeah, Roman, I tagged it Web 2.0!
