Speech and Image Processing Unit

Open positions

Three open positions are to be filled in the following categories (depending on candidates merits): The project offers good opportunity to advance both your academic career, and to gain experience for practical applications of speech and imaging technology in a projects closely relations with industrial partners. At least two of the positions will be related to speech technology.

The following qualities are desired:

  1. Degree
  2. Capability
  3. Determination
  4. Good experience on the topic
  5. Excellent programming skills
  6. Initiative and self-motivated
  7. Team working skills
  8. Creative
  9. Strong interest in research
  10. Available and ready to commit
  11. Sense of humour
Candidate must have PhD, MSc, or BSc degree (1), with excellent grades to show that he/she is capable (2), and motivation to aim at the next level (3). Degree should be in CS, EE or in a closely related field, and sufficient knowledge on signal processing needed for language technology (4). Completed degree is required, not for formality, but for showing your determination (3).

Excellent programming skills (5) are needed as most of the work requires real programming, not just Matlab simulations. The person should know all about C language with eyes blindfolded and standing upside down, and even though we are not software company, knows how to make modular sofware that can be maintained longer than in a half a year project. Symbian programming skills would be plus. Or at least you should be willing to learn it during the project.

The person should provide results without constant supervision (6), and have strong self-motivation to learn more. Yet, we do work as a team, and not as inviduals, so co-operating with the others is must (7), both in idea development, practical implementations, and reporting. The more experienced persons (post doc, PhD students) are expected to supervise the less experienced ones (PhD students, Trainees).

And as we are a research group, we are not only implementing existing ideas but you should be ready to develop completely new solutions that even we do not know yet (8). Even though closely motivated by practical applications, this is a research position so it is expected by default that you are willing to learn more, develop yourself, and progress the research (9). This is a project position but you should be willing to stay sufficiently long (10), at least 3-4 years for a PhD student.

The last but not least requirement is that you have a sense of humour (11) to tolerate the difficult boss and to survive the Finnish winter. You will be required to swim in lake of 0 degree water in January. If you are not prepared to do that, do not bother to apply.

For compensation for the work (not the swimming) we offer:
