Location information:

General

Joensuu is a university town and the capital of the North Karelia Region, about 50 min. flight away from Helsinki.

Joensuu is a lively city of 58.000 inhabitants with industry, and companies concentrating on forestry, plastics, information technology and metal industry.

Joensuu was founded by the Emperor Nicholas I of Russia, on 29th November 1848. Soon Joensuu profiled itself as a town of merchants and artisans, being so that at the end of the 19th century most of the inhabitants earned their living from trade and handicrafts. Rising sawmill industry together with the strong cultural and association activity of the late 19th century also grounded the way of the city towards a vibrant school town in the area of eastern Finland.

The most important cornerstones of the city's development took place in the post-Second World War years, namely adding Pielisensuu (industrial) municipality to the city, establishments of the Province of North Karelia and the University of Joensuu. In 2005 the physical area of the city grew markedly (being now 1313 km2) when the municipalities of Kiihtelysvaara and Tuupovaara were joined to Joensuu.
