Introduction

The first International Summer School on Educational Technology was organized at the Mekrijärvi Research Station of the University of Joensuu in August 26-30,2002. Twenty-five PhD students from four different countries were participating to activities mentored by lecturers Dr.Piet Kommers (University of Twente, the Netherlands), Dr. Looi-Chee Kit (National University of Singapore), Dr. Esko Kähkönen (University of Joensuu), Dr. Erkki Sutinen (University of Joensuu).

The event was successful, so it was decided organize the summer school on an annual basis. The interdisciplinary summer school is intended for potsgraduate students, teachers and researchers specilizing in educational technology. The activities of summer school are based on collaborative projects. Lectures are designed to support the student work.

Topics

The aim of the summer school is to focus on both technical and educational aspects of educational technology. Projects are done in heterogeneous groups in order to foster multi-disciplinary approaches into educational technology design. The program of the summer school in 2003 consists of three tracks:
