WELCOME TO THE FASCINATING FIELD OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY!
Educational technology research at the Department of Computer Science, University of Joensuu, develops novel tools for learners with particular challenges or barriers in learning.
The learning gaps that need to be bridged might be due to several reasons, like physical distance, time constraints, lacking learning resources, mental or physical disabilities, or cultural differences, to mention but a few.
These difficulties inspire us to overcome them.
They take us to create learning environments for Tanzanian students, develop a distance education scheme for pupils in the rural villages of Northern Karelia, design mindtools for better comprehension of interrelated concepts, analyze reasons for dropping out of courses, inspire students into more creative and unconventional thinking.
We emphasize the feedback from potential users at the very early phase of technology development. We are happy to have active user groups at our Kids' Club as well as in our Virtual Studies in Computer Science project - they help us to identify specific requirements for quality education.
Our team wants to be a truly interdisciplinary and international one. We have been lucky to find people from such diverse areas as education, engineering, and theology. However, based at a Computer Science department, we are particularly interested in how to use available technologies in a fresh way, but also develop new innovations to meet existing educational challenges. For creating exciting future technologies.
We carry out our research tasks in close collaboration with other major institutions working in the area, such as the University of Twente (NL), the University of Warwick (UK), Weizmann Institute of Science (IL), University of Southern Denmark (DK).
