JOENSUUN YLIOPISTO Tietojenkäsittelytieteen laitos Usability Engineering / Käytettävyystekniikat EXERCISES 7/Week 18 18: X task Preparing and Conducting Usability Testing Individually or in group of two (no more), develop a test plan. Read the rest of this task carefully. Choose an application or product, e.g. your previously developed Mock-ups, a web-site of your choice (e.g. a freemail), Jeliot 3 (http://cs.joensuu.fi/jeliot), Text Processing sw., a spreadsheet, car-radio interface, documentation, a paper form, etc.. Concentrate on one or two features (or problems) of the product that interest you and that can be tested. Alternatively, concentrate on two effects of the product on users that can be tested. Develop a test plan (about 3 pages) according to the materials from the lectures. Give a problem statement and test objectives. Select one performance and one preference measure (qualitative and quantitative goal) to test. Define what data/measures are related to the goals and prepare to measure them. For the preference measure, devise a short (3 questions) questionnaire. Select two tasks that involve the feature(s) you are interesting in (shall take no longer than 10 minutes to complete). Prepare materials needed, pre- and post-test questionnaires (if testing e.g. ease of use), participants' instruction, data logging notes. Define, how data will be collected. Mention, what would be the design of your study if you would have 30 volunteering participants. Split the roles in your group, one person will be a test monitor and one person will be conducting data logging and timing. If you work alone, the course assistant will help you with collecting the data. In order to complete the exercise, you shall 1) email your test plans by midnight before the demos to Minna Kamppuri (firstname.lastname@cs.joensuu.fi), and 2) come to the demonstration and be ready to present and discuss your plan (take the plan with you!). 19: (2 points) Conducting a usability testing session according to your plan. Come to the Usability/Cognition Laboratory, room 2D303. Laboratory is located at the third floor of the Department of Computer Science. Please, gather before the given time (read below, groups were created before) near-by the lab, Minna will pick you up. Since the lab cannot accomodate more than 15 people at once, we need to split your demo group into two, each will take 50 minutes in the lab. The first groups will come from 14:15 (Finnish group) or 16:15 (foreigh students). The second groups will come from 15:05 (Finnish group) and from 17:05 (foreign students).
