Frequently Asked Questions related to studies
For most of the practical questions, you can find answers in the UEF Student services website.
1. In the description of subjects there are shotcuts such as "op", "ov", "cu", "cr", "cu". What do they mean?
The reason behind so many shortcuts is that during 2005-6 we switched
to the European grading system (ECTS). At the moment we work with the
credits in ECTS. In the old system, the unit of study was in the 'weeks' (viikko in Finnish) so the old shortcut is 'ov' (opintoviikko). The new system is in points (op, opintopiste).
1 ECTS (1 op) corresponds to about 30 hourse of work.
2. Should I get all requied credit points during first year of our degree studies, or can I receive some missing point at the second year?
The normal workload is about 60 ects per year. You should progress in such a pace so that your studies are completed in the nearest possible time. The content of IMPIT studies at the moment is 70 ECTS of course-work.
3. How do I extend my insurance? What are the costs?
Normally students are required to take insurance in their home country before coming to Finland. Please see Insurance information for more details.
However for those students who might have secured project oriented employment can as well get their insurance from any other insurance company located in Joensuu, by providing their KELA cards. Kela Card is a proof of your eligibility for health insurance in Finland
