Development project for technology education started on spring 2003. Its main purpose is to give supplementary education to teachers working in North Carelia region. The supplementary education is especially bound with the latest national wide curriculum for schools in Finland. The curriculum supports the idea of embedding technological elements in all the subjects taught, not only to technologically oriented subjects.

The teachers, who participate the supplementary education, take part in a course worth 2 credit units. The anticipated workload for the teachers is considerable, since the course work is strongly biased on applying the theoretical knowledge into their everyday teaching. The theoretical basis on the course is laid on modern learning theories supporting collaborational and student-centered working.

The computer science's contribution to this project comes in a form of educational technology. In this project, we have concentrated on three different areas of it:

  • Concretizing environments, which bring the mental models into objects of real world (like Legos)
  • Programming environments, with which one can animate the real world objects (like IPPE developed in our department)
  • Reflection environments, which help the student to observe her own learning (like Virre as well developed locally)

As it can be seen, this project does not only benefit the teachers and their students participating this project. It also benefits the research conducted here in Educational Technology research group.
